Second Grade They have become familiar with their Google logins and practiced doing it with 6th Grade helpers and myself. They have begun their typing lessons on a new website called Typetastic. It is great for learning the keyboard and I highly recommend for the classroom. It will always be on our computer lab site. They also created a document on Google Docs and learned how to do a list.

We did a science quiz and internet safety quiz for a grade as well. Our big project is learning how to create websites. They have begun a website using Google Sites and the topic is a State of their choice. They will be something we work on this school year in the lab. Many should also be active in Prodigy to practice their math skills in a fun way.

Another tool for the classroom is the Snipping Tool, which we all used to save cropped images.
As we head back into our new school year there are many new exciting things happening in our Technology Lab here at Manchester. I will of course be seeing all students each week for 45-50 minutes per class. Schedules are posted on our school website, which you can reach on the home page of this site. Generally in lab we start with typing or learning a new task. Then there is usually a project for them to work on. Finally, we sometimes will finish with some gaming for education choices. Each year I try to incorporate new things and stay up with the ever changing field of technology. My goal is to have every student prepared to tackle the tech world we see around us. One new thing this year is Minecraft for Education which is sponsored for the district. We still have our Manchester version as well. Each student will have a Google and Microsoft account. I will try to use this area to keep you updated.
Kudos to all our students who participated in the Hour of Code. Manchester was recognized at the board meeting for having 100% of its student body involved and has its name first on the districts perpetual trophy. Special recognition to Mrs. Scott's Coder Girlz , some of whom came to the board meeting to be recognized. Winter time has brought many new things to talk about here at Manchester. We will continue to work on coding as several grade levels begin Scratch and other coding projects. All grade levels will be working on different presentation programs and they will all start to work on spreadsheets as well. The students will usually finish lab with different inter-actives. We will be focusing on math, language arts, animation, and much more as we move toward spring. Grades 4-6 will be working on specific Minecraft EDU worlds along with a writing project in either Microsoft or Google for each grade level. Some other tech we will look at is slideshows, movie making, and screen casting. It should be a busy winter - spring this year. Mr. Figura
Computer Club at the Tech Museum in San Jose. This year we will focus on newspaper production and photography.
Lab focus for the fall!
Our focus in lab right now will be in many areas. The first I want to discuss is keyboarding. They have all taken tests and continue to work on lessons. We will do this at least every other week and I will be testing again in the second quarter. Those who are struggling will be given extra time in the lab. The goal for 3-4 grades is 20-25 words per minute. The goal for 5-6 grades is 25-40 WPM. Please have students use the keyboarding section of their grade level on this site to practice at home. Another thing we are focusing on is creating documents online with Microsoft 365 and Google Docs. Please try both! We will be working almost every week to become proficient at doing either one in the classroom, lab, and at home. The final piece is internet safety. We have spent twice as much time on it in the lab this year. Always be aware, keep personal information off the internet, and never share a password with anyone. If there is a problem, then let an adult or teacher know immediately. Coming in the future are mission based Minecraft for grades 4-6 and presentation applications for all grade levels. We also will work on the Hour of Code!

They will also be introduced to Microsoft 365, which gives the students even more options for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, mail, and much more. Our focus for the beginning of the year will be on Internet Safety. We will be using Brian POP along with FBI-SOS to review and learn safety on the internet. Word Processing will be our immediate focus, along with many sites as always for educational gaming. Students will also be getting their logins for Spelling City the 2nd week of school along with Newsela, for interactive language arts.
